The Petronas Towers glow through the night shift. Hours earlier workers spilled onto the streets below. Hot grease flares off endless pemanggang's. Fragrant satay permeates the humid air. Street vendors shout for custom. It's obvious, at least to Scott Chin, Kuala Lumpur burns brightest at night.

Scott has visited a thousand times over, but the cities narrative shifts every 24 hours. Now with his Canon EOS 7s, he sees it anew. Reaching for his CineStill 800T, an 800-speed, tungsten-balanced stock with 36 reasons to pull focus, Scott brings the theatre of Kuala Lumpur city streets conveniently before you. Witness it for yourself.

I’ve visited Kuala Lumpur countless times over the years as my extended family lives there, but this was the first time I arrived with the intention of seeing the city through a photographer’s eyes.

On the way to Palawan, I spent four days exploring Kuala Lumpur with my Canon EOS 7s film camera loaded with CineStill 800T, alongside my digital setup. I wanted to capture the contrast of the city, the polished modern skyline, chaotic streets, late-night markets, and the everyday moments happening between them.

I loaded up a roll of CineStill 800T with the intention of capturing Kuala Lumpur after dark. The city felt like the perfect environment for it. Neon signs, street lights, busy markets, and the mix of old and new architecture created endless opportunities for cinematic frames. I was chasing those moody night-time moments where the glow of the city becomes part of the image itself.

The first roll of film ended up becoming part of the story itself. I completely forgot I shot this roll in Kuala Lumpur, and after travelling through Asia and going through around 12 airport X-rays, the negatives came back heavily damaged. Instead of throwing them away, the strange colours, light leaks, and distortion created an unexpected neo-dystopian feel, almost like something from a Blade Runner-inspired version of Kuala Lumpur.

Alongside the film, I experimented with night photography on digital, trying to recreate that cinematic 800T mood through editing. The result was a mix of vibrant city scenes and darker, atmospheric frames that captured Kuala Lumpur as more than just a stopover destination.
